Proactive Social Change Conference Call

In the world we are working to co-create, Social Change Activists have the support they need for their unique challenges. The purpose of the PSCCC is to provide an opportunity for Social Change Activists to support each other by offering a free, open Proactive Social Change Conference Call based on the idea of a leaderful circle. The call will take place on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month from 9:00 to 10:30p.m. Eastern time starting on Tuesday, January 13, 2009. The conference service is free, but individual long-distance charges (if any) will apply.

Conveners Susan Livingston and Mercedes Frace have training and experience in NVC empathy, role play, coaching, and mediation, and they have an extensive network of information resources to supplement their knowledge of specific activist issues. In addition, participants on the call may offer to share other modalities or resources. Anyone who works for social change or who works as an employee or as a volunteer for an organization that works for social change is encouraged to join this call.

The PSCCC is a support call for Social Change Activists with challenges they experience in their work such as frustration with regulations or regulators, intra-group conflict, and activist burnout. At the same time, the PSCCC is a practice call for participants who want to provide support to Social Change Activists. Personal growth issues will be addressed only in the context of social change work. If your challenge is in other areas such as intimate relationships, parenting, or power-sharing in the workplace, we would prefer to address your concerns in a context other than PSCCC.

Inspiration for this call came from several sources, most significantly Miki Kashtan’s monthly activist support call for the Department of Peace Campaign. However, the “feel” of the call will be more like that of the weekly NVC Academy Practice Group where some callers attend to get support, others to provide support, and still others to hold the space.

Frequently Asked Questions

Question: What do you mean by free and open?

Answer: There are no forms to fill out or dues to pay; there are no expectations about how often you participate. The only requirement to participate in the call is that you be actively engaged in proactive social change work.

Question: What is a leaderful circle?

Answer: This is a play on words that is meant to imply that leadership is valuable and that every participant is as much a leader as the Conveners. The Conveners will care for the technical aspects of group management and focalize the Opening and Closing Rounds and the Agenda-building segment, but the Content portion of the call will be focalized by those whose challenges are being addressed, and any participant who has passion and expertise for a particular challenge can offer support. The goal of this format is to live fully NOW in the world we are working to co-create.

Question: How do I sign up?

Answer: Email Susan Livingston (susan@propeace.net) and express your intention to join the call. Please include the date of the call (so we can confirm that there will be a call on the date you are wanting to participate) and your connection to social change work (to maintain the integrity and purpose of the group). Susan will respond with the call-in information and add your name to the contact list for announcements about future calls.

Question: Why do I have to sign up for each call?

In order to create an intimate environment for full participation and sharing and effective support, each call will be limited to ten participants. Confirmations will be made on a first-come, first-served basis after taking into account the intention of the Conveners to strike a balance of skill levels and to encourage diversity.

For more information about the format of the call, to ask a different question, or to sign up for the call, please contact Susan Livingston at susan@propeace.net.

Fourth Tuesday in March

...is tomorrow, and I'm just now getting these reminders out. We want to hear what you are up to and support you in your work - and you get to connect with some really cool activists. There's still room on the call if anyone in this community is interested in participating. Just write to me at susan@propeace.net, and I'll respond with more details about the call and a formal invitation from freeconference.com with connection information. Remember: It's free, and there's nothing to join.

Second Tuesday in March

We offer the PSCCC on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month from 9:00p.m. to 10:30p.m. EDT (6:00 to 7:30 PDT), so the next call is this coming Tuesday! To register, please write to me off-list as described below.

This will be the fifth call in the regular series (not counting the pilot we did in early November), and participants report that the call meets needs for support and community. We are starting to see a very satisfying mix of returning people and newcomers as well as a balance of skill and experience levels. Curious? Check us out!
